I grew up in the Black Hills, the daughter of Dr. Richard and Marge Kovarik and sister to Steve, Tom, Camille and Peter. Next I pursued a nursing degree at Carroll College in Helena, Mt. (learned how to cross-country ski here and continued to pursue downhill skiing and hiking), which then led me to the Pacific Northwest and my first job as a Burn Nurse at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. I learned to scuba dive there, and took a side job in the Hyperbaric Chamber at Virginia Mason. My graduate degree from the U. of Washington led me into a teaching career which I pursued for many years, 13 of them in Spokane. I still help teach a course in the Fall for the medical school on Interdisciplinary Palliative Care, and teach on-line occasionally for Regis University in health-care ethics.

My parents instilled a great love of the outdoors which has continued throughout my life. There’s nothing I enjoy more than a day out hiking in the Hills with friends/family. I was fortunate to belong to the Spokane Mountaineers which included many adventures including being in a “snow coffin” on Mt. Athabasca in Canada, doing a crevasse rescue session on Mt. Rainier, and being helicoptered into the backcountry for a week of incredible skiing, avalanche beacons and all.

It is important to me to stay in shape to do the activities that I love and be able to keep up with my nieces, nephews and young cousins, and Koko is the first gym I’ve found where working out indoors is really a pleasure! I’m especially enjoying helping our 6 Week Challengers on their journey to health, and helping new members get started. As a nurse, I’m focused on well-being in body-mind-and spirit, and have a passion for helping others achieve that beautiful balance in life.
